JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA Fiesta Valenciana, 1893 Signed and dated J Sorolla/1893 lower left Oil on canvas 122 x 190 cm; 48 x 74 3/4 in.

We are delighted to announce the opening of the latest and final edition of our touring exhibition Sorolla: A Celebration of Life. Including a selection of paintings not hitherto on view, we very much look forward to welcoming you to our Madrid gallery. We would also like to extend our warmest thanks to everyone who visited the show in London and New York.

Together with John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini, Joaquín Sorolla was the most celebrated painter of his time, whose output is key to understanding fin de siècle European art.

Hailing from private collections, the artworks included in Sorolla: A Celebration of Life encompass many of Sorolla’s most recurrent themes, including social realism, insightful portraiture, scenes painted en plain air- such as a sun-dappled Valencian terrace- and, crucially, the sea. Ever the lively protagonist, Sorolla’s sea is captured with deft brushstrokes, conveying the crashing of waves and the swirl of foam, lapping around happy bathers.
